One of my really good friends bitched about how they weren’t getting any of my RPG mailing list emails (the list has like 5 people on it. Too many to remember to mail individually). They have an sbc-global.net email address *sigh* So I decided to log into the server and see whats going on. This is what I received:
Jan 11 17:36:32 vadept qmail: 1231724192.132200 delivery 42192: failure: Connected_to_207.115.20.21_but_sender_was_rejected./Remote_host_said:_553_5.3.0_flpi189_-_n0C1aVjR003857,_DNSBL:521<_209.142.3.151_>_is_blocked.__For_information_see_http://att.net/blocks/
Hm, lets see how much FAIL AT&T can give me:
- http://att.net/blocks/ gives me a 404 error. Way to go!
- My email server is on zero RBL’s and gets a clean bill of health from Spamhaus.
- Googling the error points me to: http://worldnet.att.net/general-info/521.html
- They have a link to a form there, its at http://www.att.net/general-info/bls_info/block_admin.html
Now here is where the snowball of stupdity just keeps on growing. Now you have to paste in your error into the form box, but the form box is way too small to paste the entire message error in. Furthermore it bitches if it sees any special characters (say, like < > which are PRESENT IN ITS FUCKING ERROR). So in the “what changes have you made” section, I said that their error-message link was broken, the error pasting was too small, and i’m not on any RBL’s.
So if you’re an AT&T admin reading this, please fix your shit. From one admin to another this looks really bad. I know you’re a big badass telco/world-domination company, but not fixing this is just going to have my friend drop your service like a hooker with herpes and give their money to a company that has their shit together.

Turns out they made a screensaver to use idle CPU time to visit the webpages of known spamming websites.. It turned into an effective DDoS against them.. heh..
Now all we need are spamassassin rules that if one of the SURBL (www.surbl.org) rules fire off, it goes and wgets’s the website in question and just dumps the output.. Couple hundred email servers doing this at once and I guarantee that there would be considerable less linkage in spam messages..
I’m such a ninja.
I setup IMAP on my email server, and now I can seamlessly check/answer email from work (using mutt) and at home (using kmail).. All without having the headache of dealing with syncing pop3 mailboxes, etc.
I know, I suck, but hey, it makes me happy.
I have an idea.
We should start a RBL of email servers that have those stupid virus autoresponders… I’d host one, and im sure that other people would use/contribute to it.
Unfortunally, the intellegent people who just drop virus-laden emails are in the minory.. Its like trying to filter out a pond of sewage with a coffee filter.
I dont even know why this whole concept bothers me so much, since I just route all of those emails to null via spamassassin..
Who’s with me with a RBL of retarded email servers? We’ll give a good rejection back so they know why they are getting blackholed.
Blah..
My box is getting hammered by that stupid new virus. About
2-10/min for the past 20 hours or so.. All are going to non-existant
@deadjournal.com addresses.. My email server is just dropping the
message… Our email servers at inreach are getting about 4-5x that
amount, but the’re distributed across multiple machines, so the hit
isnt that bad..
Whats worse, is im getting bombarded by these stupid “You sent an email
with a virus” emails from administrators who dont know how to setup
their fucking virus scanners.. Dont they realize that the FROM address
is forged? Very frustrating to see people who dont know how to set
their shit up correctly. They should do what we do, and just
silently drop the email message…
Ah well, again, the unix geeks have to bail out the microsoft tards yet
again.. Ironic how this virus DDoS’s SCO using the product of their
biggest funder…
SCO’s website is already offline.. If I were their upstream, i would
not really be in the best mood.. Talk about hosting a
liability… Superbowl sunday i’m keeping one eye on the game,
and the other eye to see what happens when all of these drones decide
to blow off SCO (mostly to see if our broadband and colo MRTG graphs
spike)..
Blah
