Making music with telsa coils

March 29th, 2009 scsi 1 comment

Wow.  I’ve never seen this before, but its really neat.

Basically if you switch a telsa coil on and off at a specific frequency, it creates lightning that ionizes the air at that frequency.  Thereby you can turn telsa coils into gigantic speakers that shoot out lightning that resonates.

Happy.

Got the server up and working and everything resync’d. Now i can sleep at night.

Spent the evening hanging out at home working on the server.

Dax asked me to be the best man at his wedding.. Last night he said “you’re in the wedding, you’re the best man!”. I said “WTF! I didnt know this”. He felt bad because he sorta sprung it on me, so he formally asked me today. Of course I said yes.. Dax and Sena have been dating for like 12 years, back before Beka and I got together (beka used to go out with Sena’s brother), so im really happy now they are finally getting married

He came over today to drop off the ferrets. He’s leaving for washington until monday to visit his fiance’s parents who recently fled california and bought a house in washington.

His birthday is monday, so I gave him his birthday present now. A hand-carved pipe from a pipe-maker around the Santa Cruz area. He loved it. We sat out back smoking it and drinking rum.

His fiance’ (Sena) dad came down to pick up his “babies”. His rifles that i’ve been storing in my safe while they were moving. Had to be around 10 or so fine firearms that made me sad to leave. The safe was so full of gun goodness. Richard is much like tiffany’s dad; really cool and easy to talk to. Likes to shoot guns and other things, really awesome guy. I know two awesome Richards that live in neighboring states now.

So we all sat around out back bullshitting, drinking rum and smoking pipes. Talking about washington, life, work, etc. Dax wants his bachlor party to involve 48 hours of D&D and lots of booze.. I can arrange something like that.

Im finally done with my 30 hours of CE education thats due 8/31. Yay for me! Time to mail off my pharmacy license renewal!

    Whacky California!

January 27th, 2006 scsi No comments

    Lets start from the beginning.

California (as you know) unlike the rest of the sane US, has an ‘assault weapons ban’ (AWB) on stuff like AR-15′s, AK-47′s, etc. Its been dubbed an ‘Ugly Gun Ban’ because it classified guns as AW’s based upon stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the act of firing it. Such things include a flash supressor, a pistol grip, and the ability to change out magazines like a pistol. So california banned all of them because they look “Scary”. This is completely besides the point that I could do more damage with a WalMart accessable deer rifle than any AW.

Its a stupid ban, because 99.9% of all crime with handguns are commited with stolen pistols. What gang-banger is going to wield an AR-15 to hold up a liquor store. Also, the AWB that affected the rest of the US expired in 2004, and have we seen an increase in violent crimes with scary looking guns? Nope. But since California has its own, the rest of the state can get cool stuff, but not us Californians.

Now, within the last 6 months or so, someone took notice that the weapons on the “banned list’ only listed weapons by generic terms, like AR-15 and AK-45 (those are 2 specific makes made by Colk and Kalonishkof (spelling sucks) ). Apparently if you want to ban weapons in california, you need to specify the exact model (like Stagg-15 from Stagg Arms) not a generic nomenclature (AR-15 by Cole). So someone wrote the Attorney General of Calfornia and said “With knowledge of this law, can I legally import Brand-X lower and have it be legal in california). The answer was yes, that an AR-15 lower could be imported as a “Rifle” and not as an AW.

The sound of Feinsteins and Boxers jaw hitting the ground resonated through California.

So in came the tidal wave of AR-15 lowers into California. The only stipulation is that you legally could not put anything on these that would make them an AW, which means you could had 2 choices:

  • Pistol grip and a ‘fixed 10 round magazine’ (which by law needed a ‘tool’ to remove)
  • No pistol grip with a removable 10 round mag.

    People opted for door #1.

Now just by people I know alone, there have been over 50 lowers imported (I got 2, friend of mine got 4, etc). Word today is that california is closing the loophole and making a long list of model numbers that would fall under the AWB. The lowers that I bought is on that list.

Which means that in the mail, i’ll get a little letter from the Dept of Justice saying that I now own an AW, and I must pay $20 to register the firearm as an AW if I want to keep it. Once its registered as an AW, I can put whatever I want on it (Pistol grip + Removable Mag, etc). There is no gray area here, if its an AW and registered as an AW then you can do whatever the hell you want with it to make it as scary-looking as possible.

So the moral to this story is that for the low price of $20, California somehow makes a ‘scary’ looking AW perfectly legal and safe in the publics eyes.

    Comp Sci vs Pharmacy

December 20th, 2005 scsi No comments

I’m in a somewhat unique situation. Half of my friends are in the medical profession (Dentist, pharmacists ranging from running hospitals to poison control to hospital to retail). The other half are all computer science/administrators types working at big companies like 6A, google, etc…
As a result, I feel that im somewhat in a position to translate medical jargon into a computer’ish language (enzymes as subroutines that can be blocked by invalid ‘data’, etc) that computer people can understand.. I’ve always wanted to write a ‘Human Biology for Computer Science Majors’ book, but thats not the point of this thought.
Ive really started to get bothered that I cant do cool innovative things on my own working in pharmacy. To do so would require:

  • Million Dollar equipment (spectrometers, raw chemicals)
  • Skills that arent taught in pharmacy school
  • Things that would prevent people from dying while testing out what im making.
  • Money.
I cant just hack out this cool program to pass the time or work on a cool fun project.
Sure I have medical knowledge, which some of my friends (i guess) think is really cool.
I guess the summary of this random post is that I cant birth anything cool, just use..
